The Disappeared Tarn…

The Disappearing Tarn is a fickle little tarn that appears on the mountain (Mount Wellington) every so often. After really heavy rains or a big snow melt, the bouldery depression fills up with crystal clear blue waters, and lasts for as long as it lasts. Spoken of as a ‘hidden gem’ or something only the locals know about, I assumed it would be really hard to find, hidden off the track like a lot of…

Western wilderness wandering

Not a huge amount of wandering on our last trip up the west coast. There was a bit, as much as can be possible at times with small children and not so small children. This time we really had no plans at all, other than head up to Rosebery and crash for a few nights with some mates. The only definite was to get to Strahan, to capture portals and make fields, although I didn’t…

Portrait shoot: Evan and Paddy

Oh man, I had such a blast this morning. Kids are pretty damn fun to photograph I’ve decided. Paddy and Evan bought around some of their favourite things and we proceeded to stuff about and get some photos in between. I’m very jealous of Evan’s lightsaber. It glows blue and red and makes awesome sounds as well. Unfortunatley he remembered to take it home with it. Bugger. I guess I will just have to get…

Portrait shoot: Gerry and Sarah

Technically it was two shoots, one at the club last week, and one here in my cosy little home studio. Cosy is code for teeny tiny and a little bit squishy, although it works well. No room for judo throws or take downs, that’s what the shoot at the club was for. I’m enjoying playing studio portraits. Very different from the usual things I have photographed to date, but it’s fun. I do need to work on…

Mount Misery | Still Not Miserable

Tas Field Nats ascend upon Mount Misery What a marvellous Sunday was spent wandering the tracks at Mount Misery with an equally marvellous group of people. The Field Nats last visited Mount Misery in 2018, you can read about it here. That post will give you some info on the walks and how to get there. I won’t bother repeating myself. I’m efficient like that… Back in 2018 I was going through a pretty strong fungi phase. Can’t remember if that was before or after my orchid one. Potentially…

Herbarium | Day Ten

We found this weird Stellaria up in the central plateau a while back. We didn’t really notice it was weird at first. We just kinda went ‘it’s a Stellaria, it’s probably just S. multiflora’ and then moved along looking for what we were there looking for. Which was a Senecio and some Carex. Anyways, I took some photos, because it was really cute and planned to just ID it later. Turns out, that Stellaria multiflora (both subspecies) don’t actually have flowers. Well they do, but they don’t. They don’t…

Photographing Nature | Nicely

What constitutes the perfect nature photo? Is it the detail and the sharpness? The composition? The balance of colour and light or the way they interact? Perhaps it is all those things and no doubt you will come up with a whole range of different factors which contribute to creating the perfect image. In reality there is no perfect image. There is perfect to you, perfect to me and perfect to them, but chances are none of those perfects align… One thing which we don’t often…
