Three months later…
I always have the best intentions to keep posting regularly and updating parts of the site, but something always slides. I blame summer. I am not a fan of summer, and the sun and the hotness. I react to summer like most people seem to react to winter, with dread and moaning. Although I do try and moan as little as possible. It is fun at first, playing on the beach and not worrying if…
The panther of Mount Wellington…
… and his friend the mountain lion. This afternoon I decided to take a leisurely stroll up behind the Chalet on Mount Wellington, to see what I could see. I wasn’t after anything in particular, just a general wander to look at the plants and see who is flowering and maybe find another Caladenia alpina. The wind was minimal, the sun was out and it was a beautiful early summer day. As I scanned the…
Orchids, the latest obsession…
Fungi season finished a while ago, which was sad. Not massively sad to the point of sinking into a pit of depression, but sad enough. I think a big part of the sad is also that being the end of fungi season means the end of the winter season. I’m very much a winter person. The cold, the wet, the misty, the non-snakey kind of weather. I tend to get a bit ‘bleh’ when the weather…
Boots – Beams – Burnie
Last Wednesday night was the annual Advocate newspaper reader snapshot calendar awards night thingy. My little mate Leena landed Miss December, so we wandered on up to the North of the state to partake in some wine drinking and frock wearing. Yeah ok, we didn’t do the frock thing. Jeans and boots and making sure I got the right coloured beanie to bring out the colours in my un ironed flanellete… All class, all class.…
Mount Misery | Still Not Miserable
Tas Field Nats ascend upon Mount Misery What a marvellous Sunday was spent wandering the tracks at Mount Misery with an equally marvellous group of people. The Field Nats last visited Mount Misery in 2018, you can read about it here. That post will give you some info on the walks and how to get there. I won’t bother repeating myself. I’m efficient like that… Back in 2018 I was going through a pretty strong fungi phase. Can’t remember if that was before or after my orchid one. Potentially…
Herbarium | Day Ten
We found this weird Stellaria up in the central plateau a while back. We didn’t really notice it was weird at first. We just kinda went ‘it’s a Stellaria, it’s probably just S. multiflora’ and then moved along looking for what we were there looking for. Which was a Senecio and some Carex. Anyways, I took some photos, because it was really cute and planned to just ID it later. Turns out, that Stellaria multiflora (both subspecies) don’t actually have flowers. Well they do, but they don’t. They don’t…
Milles Track | Mt Wellington | Spring snow
Milles Track | Mt Wellington | Spring snow I have literally only left the house once in the past 8 days, and that was for a two hour uni prac where I got to measure metabolic rates of meal worms… Snotty noses (mine) and pus covered tonsils (Mr 6 year old) have pretty much had me couch bound for too long. Friday night I decided that no matter what the weather I was going to spend some hours in the bush, maybe walk out to Wellington…
