Aurora Australis | What The HECK
It would be negligent of me to not acknowledge the massive reaction of charged particles which recently got ejected from the sun and reacted with the various gases in the atmosphere… Or what is commonly referred to as the Aurora Australis. Holy freaking shit balls. That was the most insane sky I have ever seen. Granted, over the past few years I haven’t really spent much time out after dark chasing auroras. However, in the…
Mergin Maps | Data Collecting for the Win
Do you data? I love collecting data. Some might say I have a bit of a strange relationship with timing, counting, plotting and collecting information in relation to things I do. Don’t get me wrong, I can do a task without monitoring these things, although it’s not my ideal way. I acknowledge that not all data is useful, or beneficial, and at times, it may be rather pointless to collect. However I like useless information…
Mount Cameron | Field Nats and Granite
Easter spent the right way I have written about the Tas Field Nats Club before, a couple of times (here and here), and now I am writing about them again. This time in relation to the Easter Camp at Mount Cameron. Field Nat Easter Camps started way back in the early 1900’s, when they used to load up the horses and carts with big giant tents, and all the women had on their corsets and…
Lake Belcher Track | With No Lake
The Day Ten Project Recently I switched to a nine day fortnight at work, leaving the tenth day for exploring and botanising. Today I decided to wander out past Wombat Moor along the Lake Belcher Track up at Mount Field National Park. Even though Lake Belcher is meant to be only a few hours walk, naturally I only made it halfway, because…. plants…. One day I would like to get that far. Perhaps I need…

Mount Misery | Still Not Miserable
Tas Field Nats ascend upon Mount Misery What a marvellous Sunday was spent wandering the tracks at Mount Misery with an equally marvellous group of people. The Field Nats last visited Mount Misery in 2018, you can read about it here. That post will give you some info on the walks and how to get there. I won’t bother repeating myself. I’m efficient like that… Back in 2018 I was going through a pretty strong fungi phase. Can’t remember if that was before or after my orchid one. Potentially…

Herbarium | Day Ten
We found this weird Stellaria up in the central plateau a while back. We didn’t really notice it was weird at first. We just kinda went ‘it’s a Stellaria, it’s probably just S. multiflora’ and then moved along looking for what we were there looking for. Which was a Senecio and some Carex. Anyways, I took some photos, because it was really cute and planned to just ID it later. Turns out, that Stellaria multiflora (both subspecies) don’t actually have flowers. Well they do, but they don’t. They don’t…

The panther of Mount Wellington…
… and his friend the mountain lion. This afternoon I decided to take a leisurely stroll up behind the Chalet on Mount Wellington, to see what I could see. I wasn’t after anything in particular, just a general wander to look at the plants and see who is flowering and maybe find another Caladenia alpina. The wind was minimal, the sun was out and it was a beautiful early summer day. As I scanned the track ahead to check for snakes that might want to kill…
